Aims of WG1

The two primary aims of this group are to successfully think through the implementation of a Renewable Originlabel for bio-based chemical products and to create a glossary of terms related to bio-based chemistry (in French and English).

Alongside this, the group has been entrusted with identifying an initial selection of players in the chain concerned by this Renewable Origin label.

Between now and the third quarter of 2008 the group is set to be in a position to provide this glossary and to define the approach envisaged in terms of standardisation, certification and labelling of the renewable origin of bio-based chemical products.

WG1 progress report

The WG1 working group of the ACDV ensures that the various stages of standardisation, certification and labelling are fully incorporated into its reflection without oversimplification: indicating the bio-based origin of a product could provide information on the renewable origin / fossil origin aspect, thus revealing potential savings on fossil resources, but must not under any circumstances replace a lifecycle assessment.

Concerning the implementation of a Renewable Origin label
Further to its initial considerations, the WG1 working group of the ACDV is moving towards the implementation of a label that would be entitled “Bio-Based Products”. This label could be translated into French as Produits (d’origine) Renouvelable(s) Végétales” (PRV).

Concerning the identification of players in the chain concerned by this Renewable Origin label
The ACDV has begun discussions at the European level on this subject. To do this, it will take an active role in the European group that brings together European Bioplastics, EuropaBio, etc. in order to draft recommendations to the European Commission (EC) on the subject of “bio-based products”, particularly within the scope of the EC initiative on expanding markets.
The ACDV wants to be the driving force of this reflection in France.

Concerning the definition of standards defining the renewable origin
Initially ASTM (ASTM International - American Society for Testing and Materials) standards based on C14 could be the basis for the work of industrialists.
