How to indicate the biobased part of a product

Test and label your product for biobased content

The biobased content indicator is of interest to you if :

  • You have products, either intermediates or a finished product, which are made wholly or partly from biomass (plant based feedstock),
  • You are interested in increasing your customers or consumers awareness of the origin and sustainable sourcing of your product.
  • You want to quantify the amount of renewable material in finished goods to benefit from public procurements or incentives.

What is the biobased content of your product, and how is it estimated?

There are a number of methods to quantify the biobased part of your product.

A first approach consists in expressing the carbon part coming from the plant. It can be done by using the US ASTM D 6866 method based on the presence of the C14 isotope. Calculation of the biobased carbon of your product is useful in the context of bio (renewable) versus petro (fossil) emissions and the evaluation of the carbon footprint.

If you want to express the amount of renewable material used in substitution of fossil resources, we propose an alternative approach: the determination of the biobased content. It covers not only the carbon ratio but the different elements represented in your product.

It enables you to communicate the total use of biobased renewable resources, and therefore fossil resource savings, using a mass indicator associated with a trade mark.

Status: We are in the process of testing the methodology as well as the process. The pilot phase will last until march 2012.

Get your products' certification granted by independant laboratory & certifier (SGS CTS)

  • Step 1: Send the analysis request to SGS Multilab by using the form “DOC 1".
The analysis to be carried out are different depending on the type of product. The products obtained by chemical reaction and similar products (for example obtained by fermentation processes) are to be tested on their C14 content, water content and elemental analysis.
For products obtained by simple blending (formulated products), only the C14 analysis is requested.
When receiving your analysis order, SGS Multilab will contact you for a cost estimation.
Once you confirm your order, the delay for result getting is between 2 and 3 weeks.
  • Step 2: Once you got your analysis results, you have to fill in the biobased content declaration and sent it with the results to the certifier office.
Use the "DOC 2A or DOC 2B" form model.  The form choice depends on the type of products, either chemicals or formulated products.
You can use a blank sheet of paper if your description does not match with our models. In this case the basic rule remains valid: the certifier will need all information regarding your biobased content, product description and specifications. Please contact them to check content before sending your documents. Should your dossier be incomplete, SGS CTS will have to call you and request the missing data.
When receiving the declaration, SGS CTS will send you an invoice. Expect a 2-week time for the process.
  • Step 3: at this stage the secretariat of the association will be notified that your declaration is right and you will have to pay the bill to the secretary of the ACDV to get the communication elements.

    ACDV will :
    - send you all the graphic elements so you can build your communication (the label is protected over Europe)
    - promote the certified products on its website. It implies you allow the ACDV to communicate on your labelled products : product name, % biobased content, % C14, market type (cosmetic/coating/...)

SGS-CTS will give you an attestation of biobased content.

The label stays valid for a period of 3 years, one check is scheduled during this period by an independant office.

What are the costs for the certification process?
The costs associated with the certification process were negotiated by ACDV with SGS Multilab as for the analysis  and with SGS CTS as for the validation.

They break down into:
- Costs of the analysis: no exact figure, since they vary according to the form of the product (liquid or powder), its production method (chemical or blending), its composition (with or without Sulphur) and the preparation needed before the analysis (drying, grinding…), plus additional costs for preparation if needed.
- Certification validation costs
- Administrative costs (accountancy, traceability, logo maintenance around Europe, promotion of the labelised products....)

Altogether they amount is about 1 500 € .
